Perfect as either a starter player or a second-room unit, the Apex AD-1165 does double duty as a movie source and a music player, giving you a choice of video outputs as well as decoding for the popular MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) music formats. If you burn pictures from your digital camera to CD-Rs and CD-RWs, you can even use the player for watching slideshows right on your TV. Use standard CD-R/CD-RW media filled with JPEG images, or burn Kodak Picture CDs for even greater viewing options--fancy transitions, timing options, etc.

And, whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the AD-1165 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your commercial DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, uses the player's component-video outputs to create a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. In the audio realm, a set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (RCA/coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Apex's Active Full-screen Function (AFF) helps resize widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) video images to fill 4:3 aspect-ratio sets, and an LED indicates power status.
