We picked up the Denon 1710 earlier this month when we were looking for a decent replacement for a failing 6 year old DVD player. After reading a variety of reviews here on Amazon on many of the lower priced DVD players, we decided to avoid the bulk sellers (Wal-Mart, Best Buy) and purchased this system from a more upscale local AV shop. This is a modest machine from a reputable manufacturer that has so far provided everything my kids have asked of it. The controls, while basic, provide all the necessary elements, and the picture quality is quite sharp using the component video outputs. Since our TV is a 6-year-old Sony, I cannot really evaluate this properly, nor can I comment on the progressive scan mode. It does pause for less than 1 second at the layer transition, but this is not unexpected at this price. The 1710 provides control over brightness and color, but I saw little reason to adjust this.
