Tech Talk
Progressive scanning: Progressive scanning displays all the horizontal lines of a picture at one time, as a single frame. A progressive scanning DVD player converts the interlaced (480i) video from DVD into progressive (480p) format for connection to a progressive display. It dramatically increases the vertical resolution.

Component video: Video signals with three channels of separate information that make up the picture. There are a couple types of component video, such as R/G/B and Y/Cb(Pb)/Cr(Pr).

What's in the Box
JVC XVN410BK DVD player, remote control, 2 AA batteries, and printed operating instructions.

You might want to avoid this unit if you let kids use your entertainment center, as the tray feels like it could snap off if handled roughly; it's pretty lightweight.

When I got this player, it would freeze occasionally while playing commercial DVDs, and every 30 seconds while playing DVD-R and +R discs I burned (using Verbatim media and a Plextor burner). After about 10 seconds frozen, it would resume.

JVC has a free firmware update you can download which fixes this problem (hanging at chapter changes). You burn it to a CD-R and it's simple to update the player. It fixed the problem for me. It's at:

This firmware fix moved this player from 2 stars to 4 for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars JVC XVN410 DVD Player, August 2, 2004

I was initially pleased with this product, it was a simple hook up,and Consumer Reports gives it high marks. Unfortunately many of these players freeze up during play, and this happens every 8-10 minutes. I returned the player to Video Only, and they exchanged it for another of the same model. Imagine my dismay when this unit also froze up every 8-10 minutes. Upon returning the second unit, I was told that "freezing up" was a known problem with this player. Unfortunately the store refused to issue a refund, even though they had been aware of the freezing problem for some time.

I purchased this unit to replace my Panasonic S35 which just died after about 15 months. I am in a bind since finding a DVD player these days with an optical output for connection to my home theater receiver was proving difficult. The JVC was one of the few units still currently produced on the market which does offer this feature.

Overall, the picture quality seemed grainy compared to the Panasonic and previous Sony unit that I owned. The blue light across the door is cheesy and the DVD door itself is very fragile and flimsy. It played scratched DVD's and DVD-Rs without any problems. However, a DVD that my kids installed with some fingerprints on the disc froze and the door would not open until I unplugged the unit. Lastly, the player would freeze for a second or two when changing to the next scene periodically during the movie.

Considering the price of the JVC player compared to other brands available on the market, you can do better than this one. I'm...Read more
