Product Review
Product Description
The new KiSS DP-600 is based on the KiSS DP-500 DVD with full DivX®, XviD, MPEG-4, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, JPEG... playback, Ethernet. On top of these functions the DP-600 adds playback for two new formats from Microsoft: WMA and Windows Media 9 files allowing Video On Demand. These new features put the KiSS DP-600 in the middle of the home-computer-cinema solution. Thanks to its Ethernet connection, enabling Kiss PC-Link, the Kiss DP-600 can stream Audio/Video/Picture files found on a connected PC. The connection can also be done wireless with a PC Card and Access Point (sold separately), as the DP-600 also has a PC Card slot on its back. It provides an 802.11g wireless connection to the player which permits the streaming for video files. Those network connections also enable KiSS Web Radio to be played from the DP-600, if this one is connected to a broadband Internet connection. KiSS PC-Link gives the user the possibility to store Audio/Video/Picture content on its optional 80GB or 120 GB Hard Disk. This content can then be viewed or browsed from the player. This gives the advantage of having a collection of multimedia files all stored on the KiSS DVD Player... at a finger tip. As all the other KiSS DVD Players, the DP-600 is also firmware upgradeable.
Amazon.com Product Description
Unify your media entertainment viewing and listening with the KiSS (Keep it Simple Solutions) DP-600 networkable DVD player. This full-featured player is great for movies, of course, but it also fields disc-based music and digital photos alongside streaming content from your PC. Hook it up via a wired Ethernet connection or take advantage of the player's WLAN wireless 802.11g capability and skip the cable hookup between your PC (wherever it is) and the DVD player.

The versatile DP-600 plays DivX video, MP3 files, WMA files, JPEG digital photos, and Windows Media Video 9 (WMV9) files--including video on demand. You can connect the DP-600 directly to the Internet via a broadband connection or through a network (LAN) with a PC whose media contents can be read using the supplied KiSS PC-Link software. Powered by the Sigma Designs EM8500 decoder chip, the player itself reads DVD-Video (PAL and NTSC) as well as DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs.

The DP-600's support for DivX, ISO MPEG-4, XviD, and WMV9 video-compression formats gives you the ability download full-screen, full-motion videos from the Internet that look and sound close in quality to what you get from your television or DVD player. Audio compatibility extends to the open-source Ogg Vorbis format for music compression (slightly higher quality than MP3 for a same-sized file).

When you plug the player in for the first time, a user-friendly interface prompts you to select language, video connection type, screen size, and audio connection, and IP address, an easy 5-step setup. To enjoy the player's networking abilities, you'll need to install and run the KiSS PC-Link software (PC only, Windows 98 or higher). With PC-Link, all you have to do is select the files and you want to view and they'll be routed to your DP-600 and on to your television for viewing in any connected location.

The player's networking ability means it can also deliver Internet radio. Just select this feature from the player's WebRadio menu and you'll have access to a few thousand streaming radio stations you can enjoy right in the comfort of your living room. Once you've registered, WebRadio will let you choose, customize, and add as many radio stations as you wish.

Whether or not your living room is currently home to an HDTV, the DP-600 is ready to deliver the full potential of your uncompressed, commercial DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Outputs include component, composite-, and S-video connections, a coaxial digital-audio jack (for passing Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals to a compatible audio/video receiver), and even analog RCA outputs for decoded Dolby Digital surround (in case your AV receiver offers multichannel analog inputs but no digital processing).

KiSS will continue to update the player's firmware with improvements based on the latest research and development; the updates will be available from the support section of the kiss-technology.com Web site.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, CD-ROM with KiSS PC-Link software, a user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, a component-video cable, and an AC power cord.

The Kiss DP-600 is unreal. I have seen negative reviews on this product but I still went ahead and bought it because I thought even if these reviews were correct that the offering was too good to miss.

The negative reviews stated the following
1) The DVD drive gives out a constant whine that is so loud you can hear it over the TV
2) The PC link software is rubbish it doesn't work and they had to use windows media connect.
3) The box will crash on occasion and you have to power cycle it.
4) The wireless capability is limited you need to have your access point right next to the DP-600
5) It has no Hard...Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Device to ship this summer, April 25, 2005

Don't listen to the negative review below: the item hasn't shipped yet. I saw a prototype at NAB last week, and I was very impressed with the picture quality. They were showing WMV-HD DVDs (German pressings), so it will play those at full res. Not only will it do 1080i, it will do 1080p, according to the brochure, and the salesperson: the first consumer device to support it. Check this out for yourself when it ships in the summer! ( I know I will...)

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing array of Features, May 12, 2006

Logistiker (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews
This review is from: KiSS DP-600 Networkable DVD Player (Electronics)
This thing has been vaporware for as long as I can remember and now if it comes out this summer, it won't have near the options it should have. It doesn't have SMB support (windows directory sharing), it can't show GIF images, it has no Linux support, no FLAC support, no AAC support, no playlist support (i.e. m3u, asc, etc), no confirmed multiregion support (albeit someone will probably figure it out). It has some redeeming features like tv listings and games (who would want to play games on their tv anyway?). For the kind of money you'll have to pay for this thing (selling for $435 in the UK right now), the feature list falls quite short. Do yourself a favor and look into the competition (Zensonic z500) which provides (shipping internationally from AU or from US in July 2006) all the above support and more minus the TV listings (not that you'd use that anyway because you're really using this to watch time shifted programs from your server computer anyway right?).
