I have no idea what the specific, arcane circumstances under which the remote control work are - it was always sort of random whether or not it would do what I told it to.
About a month after buying it I put a DVD in and received the error message "WRONG DISC". What? No, I'm pretty sure that's the right disc, Memorex. I don't even remember how I got it to quit doing that.
Lasted another three months before putting in a disc just made a series of grating whirls and clicks. Maybe if I would have waited more than three minutes it would have started, but that was always the point at which it started to sound like it was damaging the disc. I tried to open the case to see if anything was visibly wrong, but the last two screws immediately stripped out when I tried to remove them. I guess if this thing has an upside it's how satisfying it feels to throw it away.

i bought mine from a target store and at first it played dvds ok but started to have a hard time with loading and then getting stuck. now (only 2 weeks and 2 movies later) it won't play discs at all and every disc i put in displays wrong disc.
to top it off there is no warranty registration card in the box just a note to go to the memorex website...there is no support for this model there. a google search reveals nothing for support either only "hot deals" for this cheap dvd player. i am going to try and take it back to target...maybe they aren't all this bad but this one was definitely a dud.

I bought this from Target and have not even had it for over a month and now it does not work AT ALL!! I had trouble as soon as I bought it. The remote was hard to use and midway through the movie the power light would go off and render the remote completely useless. Honestly I have NEVER been more disappointed in any product I have EVER purchased!!! [...]
