This review is from: Onkyo 6 Disc HDMI Player DVCP704 (Electronics)
I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-SR674 A/V Receiver and added the DVCP704 DVD player to have a matching set. I should have checked dimensions ahead of time because the 704 is quite a bit deeper (at 17") than my other components - probably due to the 6-disk changer - and hangs out of my TV stand about an inch. Not a big deal, but something to consider. Beyond the size issue, I was disappointed to discover the 704 couldn't play a CD-Video disk or SACD audio disks. For the price, the 704 seems to have limited features. Since this purchase I have seen single-disk, HDMI compatible players that support more formats at half the price. Overall, DVDs perform well and look great when connected via the HDMI interface at 1080i. The setup screen and background seem to be at a very low resolution, but you really don't spend much time looking at them.
The 674 A/V receiver and 704 DVD look good together, but the 704 is nowhere near on par with the 674.

Onkyo's HDMI player has fulfilled its billing. I spent a lot of time reviewing the various HD DVD players on the market and narrowed it down to 3 products: Onkyo's DVCP704, Sony's Blu-ray and Pioneer's HD DVD player. Realizing that the bottowm line was a DVD to output at least 1080i to my 60" Sony 1080p rear-projection LCD TV and it had to have HDMI output jacks - it was a "no-brainer". I didn't want to get involved in the HD vs Blu-ray fiasco, and I certainly didn't want to spend over $250 on this piece of equipment that might change in 2-3 years. I did want to be able to enjoy my CDs on it, so the combo unit offered by Onkyo fit the bill. In addition, I had recently purchased the Onkyo TX-S04 receiver, so having the components from the same company was a bonus.
I tested the HD output at all resolution options by watching 2 movies that I consider have a lot of detail: Gladiator and Star Wars III. I was blown away by the clarity and sharpness of these movies...at one point...Read more

I bought the Onkyo 6 Disc changer to replace an older model Onkyo 6 disc changer that I had been using for almost 9 years.
First off let me tell you that the ability to change out discs while another is playing is entirely underated. I love this capability and to be honest it is the reason I was willing to spend a little more for this versus a Sony or Samsung. Also, the difference between five and six discs may seem nominal, but is really nice if you happen to watch complete seasons of TV shows, (something I do when I am home). It is also nice just to be able to keep several discs available for viewing.
The upconverting features of this player are really nice. Not that I would know wether it is better on this player versus any of the others, lets face it I am replacing a player that is almost ten years old!! The audio capabilities of this player are fairly standard, although I know some people have complained about it not sounding as good as others - I...Read more
