I picked up this at Target for under $40, and although it looks suspiciously like one of those fake electronics they have a furniture stores, it works suprisingly well.
For that price, I got a very compact DVD player that does progressive scan and had composite video, coaxial audio and can be hacked for region-free playing. It plays NTSC and PAL DVD's flawlessly.
For the price, it's a total deal.
If it breaks in a year, I can just get another. Until then (and until Blueray prices come down), this will serve me well.

Just bought this from Target ($39.99). I was looking for a small DVD player because it had to fit in a tight space. I previously bought a Coby from Amazon which was supposed to be multi-region. Well, it wasn't and there wasn't any "hack" available online either. The thing was a piece of junk (lucky if it played region 1 disks). So far, this Philips unit has played all of my region 2 disks. I'm very happy with it.

I'm very impressed with this inexpensive player. It took me all of 10 seconds to apply the region-free hack. It plays both my NTSC Region 1 and PAL Region 2 disc great.
It also plays my DVD-Rs with no problem. I don't have any DVD+Rs so I can't comment on the review of the guy who had a problem with them.
Another thing that impressed me is the lack of lag time that you usually get when you insert a disc in a cheaper player. This one starts playing within seconds.
So if you're looking for an inexpensive DVD player but not a "cheap" player, this is it. I like it so much, I'm going to buy a second one for the bedroom.
