Amazon.com Product Review

Save space in your entertainment center with the progressive scan Philips DVP3050V/37 DVD/VCR combo, which makes it easy to record your home movies stored on disc directly to VHS tape--perfect for sending to the family for holidays. It also includes a front AV jack, enabling you to connect your digital video camcorder for direct dubbing to the VCR. The multi-format DVD player provides compatibility with a wide variety of disc formats and digital files, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, MP3, WMA, and JPEG.

The 4-head VCR offers 8-event, 1-month programmable recording. The remote's Direct Dubbing button allows you to start recording from the DVD disc without complicated menu system selection or input/output selection. Other features include PAL/NTSC playback from both DVD and VCR, JPEG photo slideshows (with flip and rotate functionality), Dolby Digital decoding, 3D virtual surround sound enhancement, and tri-lingual menu display (English, French, Spanish). It offers the following video and audio connections: Tech Talk
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

I just purchased this VCR/DVD combo at the local Wal-Mart (sorry Amazon, I had gift cards to spend, otherwise I would have purchased it here). =)

It was extremely easy to set up, and it played the first DVD flawlessly. I noticed in another review that someone complained about the DVD tray. I did not find it anymore flimsy than other DVD players in the same price range.

My only wish is that it did have an eject button on the remote. It does seem odd that Philips didn't include that feature.

Overall, I am pleased and highly recommend buying this product. If you're looking for a ton of bells and whistles and something not encased in plastic, then this isn't the product for you. But it is a decent product to watch the occasional movie, whether it be on DVD or VHS.

No eject button from the remote and the VHS rewind is slow as molasses. Otherwise OK but you can get something more up to date for the same price.

I bought this for my elderly mother - not a whiz at electronics but she knows how to insert a disc and hit play. However, it seems the machine doesn't know how to scan a disc and play. We would get various screen messages, "insert a disc," "faulty disc," "loading," but the thing wouldn't kick in. We'd eject and clean the disc. We'd eject and and re-load the disc. We'd turn it off and on again; "insert a disc," "faulty disc," "loading." Sometimes, after who knows which combination, Oh! it would play! Pretty darn frustrating for an elderly lady and her daughter so I swapped it out for my Samsung 4600. Now she is happily watching Christmas with Andre Rieu and I am listening to jet aircraft approching as I try to watch a VHS cassett. (it's pretty loud)
