Amazon.com Product Description
The Samsung DVD711 high-resolution DVD player incorporates a 10-bit video digital-to-analog converter and a 96 kHz, 24-bit audio digital-to-analog converter to ensure precise playback and pristine audio quality from every disc. Left/right audio output terminals let you use the unit with a Dolby Pro Logic receiver, so the typical six-channel Dolby Digital signal is mixed down to a compatible Pro Logic signal. The virtual 3D sound system uses 5.1-channel DVD information and simulates surround sound using just a pair of standard speakers.
The 2x audio playback allows any soundtrack to be heard even when you are fast-forwarding the video at twice the normal speed. You can also magnify portions of any image either two or four times the normal size without affecting playback. The Samsung DVD711's dual laser diode pickup system provides accurate playback of both DVD and CD sources, enabling the player to read both CD-R and CD-RW discs.
Standard S-video, composite-video, and optical digital outputs are included. The set of component-video outputs provides an optimum connection between the Samsung DVD711 and a TV set with component-video inputs. The universal joystick remote control comes with two AA batteries. Additionally, the jog-shuttle dial control system lets you scan forward and backward or pause quickly and intuitively.
Samsung offers a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Yes, it plays MP3's!!!!, September 29, 2000

After checking out the APEX Dvd player that was the first machine to play MP3's, but had bad reviews, I was happy to hear that Samsung also had a similar product in the works. The 711 works as expected, playing CD-R's with MP3 files (over 10 hours of music on one CD) and the more common self produced CD copies. The video quality is very good and the machine has all the output options one could ever need. Strangly, the manual mentions nothing of these features and actually states that CD-R and CD-RW are not supported?! Buy this one!

So Sad, June 29, 2001

I purchased this player with the hopes that it would be a quality unit. I had never purchased a Samsung product before. My DVD-711 had problems right out of the box. The first movie I played froze in several places during playback. The frame would stop for a moment, and then continue. The second DVD I played was a brand new out of the box concert video. After about and hour into the concert, my Samsung simply froze up. The screen was all streaked and the sound was stuttering. When I hit play, it corrected itself, but the sound was no longer in synch with the singer. I returned it to Amazon.com as a defective unit.

This very model of DVD player belongs to my roommate. It skips and freezes often, even on brand new DVDs. Sometimes, after removing a DVD from it, I noticed how hot the disc and player were. Of what I do know of electronics, I know that much heat should not be coming from a device that has only one small moving component. Having searched the web for possible solutions to this problem, I have come upon this page and have seen the exact same complaints from other people who have this player. This can only lead me to believe that the entire model is defective and should not be purchased. Please avoid the hassle of this poorly designed piece of machinery. Other DVD players may be more expensive, but at least they work.
