Sony DVP-NS710H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player, Black
Comment: It's been a long time since I thought about buying a dvd player and a lot has changed. I had no idea what upconverting meant and was barely familiar with HDMI. Anyway, this dvd player is simple and sleek and much smaller than any dvd player I've owned in the past. I bought an HDMI cable because I figured if my TV had the capacity, I might as well use it. I'm not the kind of person that can really tell the difference in picture/sound quality, but I did appreciate that the HDMI basically set itself up and coordinated through the TV to my universal remote without me having to do a thing.
Looks nice, works well: I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Summary: Good upscaling DVD player 2010-08-24
Comment: I recently purchased this upscaling DVD player. It has held up fine thus far, although I do know that Sony has a history with some of their optical drives wearing out as they do tend to make their laser tracks wear out quickly to force new purchases on consumers. The video quality from the HDMI out for this player is pretty good. I may have expected a little more, but you have to realize it's upscaling and basically trying to fill in missing pixels on it's own. You're not going to get close to a true "HD" signal type of quality, but it does increase the picture a good deal compared to running a DVD in standard-def and stretching it out to the full screen size. It's a shame there isn't more to the player itself as far as buttons go. If anything ever happens to the remote, you're basically stuck with about 3-4 buttons on the top that don't let you take full advantage of the player. On a positive note, it was worth my investment and it has played every DVD I have put in thus far with no problems yet.

Summary: good value 2010-08-01
Comment: My first-gen RCA DVD finally died after something like 7-8 years? It took a good whack from the vacuum cleaner to really end its useful life! I didn't know much about what was out there, and maybe would have purchased a blu-ray if I'd understood that those machines can also up-convert ordinary DVDs for my HD flat TV. But the Sony set up easily (don't forget to order an HDMI cable). For about $50 it works fine and looks good on top of my Sony receiver too.

Summary: Great dvd player, where is the eject button? 2010-07-28
Comment: This dvd player produces a great up converted 1080p output. The oddity that I first encountered was that I attempted to eject the dvd via the remote. The remote does not have an eject button. To eject the tray you have to walk over to the machine and press the eject button. It is a little thing, but I like having an eject button on the remote.
