After less than 18 months of ownership, my player, which I had treated with exceptional care, began putting large, arc-shaped cuts into random discs. I gave the player the benefit of the doubt at first, but after 4 discs were scratched in the same manner, in different slots, I knew this player was the problem. Then, to add insult to injury, the player stopped reading discs entirely just this week. I now have a huge, worthless player that I spent $600.00 on just last year. I wish I could say this was the first problem I've had with a sony product. From this moment on, I will never buy any sony electronic equipment.

I totally agree with DWPC who wrote a previous review - these are great machines for archiving your DVD collection...my DVD collection is c. 1,250 titles and growing: contained in 5 Sony Carousels - 1 DVP CX-860; 2 DVP CX-985v's and 2 DVP CX-995v's. The 860 was purchased in c. 2000 and only holds 301 DVD's - the others hold the current model # of DVD's: 400. I too at first put quite a lot of effort into trying to manage the on-screen SONY prg to keep track of where each DVD was located in the machine...then with the newer model(s), that prg changed substantially, so I decided to do it on my own with an MS-ACCESS 2000 database file, which lists for me all my collection - including which of the players, slot #, etc. where each of my DVD's is located...I can look on my laptop and/or look in a hard-copy printed version that I keep up to date in a thin binder...As far as perfomance, all of these Sony's have been absolutely excellent: never a single problem with function or with...Read more

Disk storage issues led me to investigate juke-box style players. Surprisingly there are only a few on the market and only the Sony models have kept up with the variety in data formats.

It takes a few seconds for the carousel to spin and load the selected disk. DVD picture quality on my HDTV using the the "component" outputs is stunning. I use two-channel audio only, so I can't assess the SACD or 5.1 channel performance. Audio quality is good, but like most consumer units, a good HT reciever will provide better sound from the digital output (coax or optical)

The downside of the cx995 is its disk management and on-screen interface. Its supposed to recognize disk information and file it for the on-screen menu. In fact, it only recognized a few of the DVDs I loaded, and none of my audio CDs. If you want to use the player's on-screen selection menu, you'll need to either enter the disk info with a pc keyboard or the controls (masochists only). Thus my 4-star...Read more
