PRO SCAN DVD VCR COMBO W/HDMI DIVX

Amazon.com Product Review

The SD-V594 puts the technological advantages of a progressive scan DVD player and the convenient recording and playback options of a video cassette recorder into one sleek machine. And because it is so accepting of other new technologies, such as USB and HDMI, it can act as a command center between your cherished video memories and your newest digital media.

Full-Featured DVD Player
The SD-V594 includes an integrated DVD player compatible with several disc formats: DVD Video, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD and DVD-R. Want to bring your photos out of the office and into the TV room? Simply burn your JPEG photos to a disc and the SD-V594 will provide you access to a slide show of your images with a few clicks on the player's remote control. Alternatively, you could connect a USB mass storage device to view your images. Many digital cameras will support this type of connection.

HDMI Compatible
High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly to a digital television. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format or compressed. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector.

An added benefit of connecting the D-R5 to your television with HDMI is that the unit can "upscale" commercial DVDs, which are rendered at 480p resolution, to a digitally interpolated 720p resolution, which makes for a much sharper picture. Also, the unit's built-in MPEG decoder is able to display your JPEG files at higher resolution when connected to an HDMI display.

Lacking an HDMI connection, however, the D-R5 offers 14-bit digital-to-analog video conversion at 108 MHz and component video output. This player is also DivX Home Theater Certified, which means it display popular Internet video formats, such as DivX, AVI, and MPEG4.

Hi-Fi VHS VCR
The unit's built-in VCR has four 19-micron heads for superior playback at all speeds--SP, SLP, and EP. The SD-V594 is also equiped with S-VHS quasi-playback, which means it can play, but not record, S-VHS tapes. It features stereo recording and playback, as well as MTS and SAP audio functions. Most users will appreciate the 30-second skip button, which is designed to advanced the tape precisely 30 seconds, allowing you to bypass the commercials recorded with your favorite programming.

Audio
For home theater audio hookups, the unit provides Dolby Digital and dts surround sound output through optical and coaxial ports. For analog sound systems, the SD-V594 uses 24-bit conversion at 192kHz. The D-R5 also plays MP3 and WMA files stored on a compatible disc media or USB mass storage devices.

Because I just bought an HDTV, I wanted a VCR/DVD player which would be compatible. Before I received the VCR/DVD though, I was using my new TV with my old DVD player (through the cable connection).

Upon viewing a DVD movie for the first time on this DVD/VCR combo, I was simply amazed. The picture and sound quality is superb. Everything is sharp and crisp.

The equipment is light, saves space, and it's very easy to use. I also love the fact that the remote's buttons glow in the dark.

A great value for the price, as well.

While I wanted a combo unit that included a good DVD player with HDMI (in anticipation of a LCD HDTV I plan to acquire eventually), I was even more interested in the performance and features of the VCR. I've been programming VCRs ever since they first came out, and have had two installed simultaneously on my TV for years now because there are often two different programs I want to record at the same time. After extensive research on a lot of combos, I picked this unit for features, quality of pictures, and price. I've had this for a couple months now and it's been flawless. Great picture even on long-play VCR recording (which is all I ever use in that mode).

Setup of the unit was easy. Time sets automatically (though you have to confirm that you want the unit to do this for you). Channel scan is VERY fast (not automatic). The only thing that took me a couple days to fully figure out was because of stupidity on my part: never having had a dual unit before, it didn't...Read more

After doing lots of research online about DVD/VHS players, I chose the Toshiba because it offered the best features for the price, and generally had better reviews than other products out there. After receiving the new machine, things worked fine for about a week, after which the DVD player would no longer read DVDs. After inserting a DVD it gave a "reading" message for a long time before finally saying "error". Oddly enough, the machine would read CDs just fine! I called Toshiba about the problem, but they couldn't help. Resetting the machine by unplugging it for 5 minutes availed nothing. Finally, I just decided to return it. I'm going to buy the Sony SLV-D570H to replace it. Both have HDMI outputs (DVD only), but hopefully the Sony machine won't break down on me after one week.

In terms of features with the Toshiba, the skip commercials feature overshot the commercials by three or four minutes. Programming the machine to record television programs was difficult and...Read more
