Product Review

Yamaha's silver DV-S5751 DVD Player offers so much more than simply the ability to view movies. It plays DVD-Video as well as CDs and VCDs, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW recordable formats. You can play back CD-R/RW discs, including those that contain MP3, DivX and WMA files. There is also a JPEG viewer so you can create your own family's slide shows to proudly display during family functions. It is the perfect background accompaniment. The audio and video processing with the DV-S5751 could not be better with the 192 kHz/24-bit compatible audio digital-to-analog conversion providing superior sound performance. While the 12-bit 108 MHz video DAC conversion boosts the video capabilities.Along with the superior quality playback that you have come to expect from modern technology, Yamaha has packed this unit with convenient features that will become such favorites that you will soon wonder how you ever managed without them.

The factory-reconditioned Yamaha DV-S5751S is equipped to make the most of your home entertainment system, playing everything from ultra-high-resolution audio and video formats to MP3/WMA discs to JPEG digital photos. Among the formats handled by the player are DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DiVX, CD, CD-R, and CD-RW, along with the aforementioned MP3, WMA, and JPEG discs. Home theater enthusiasts with HD or HD-ready TVs, meanwhile, will appreciate the unit's progressive scan technology. Referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, progressive scan creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The DV-S5751S features 108 MHz/12-bit video digital-to-analog (DAC) conversion for pristine video quality in any format, along with 192 kHz/24-bit compatible audio DAC conversion. Listeners can also increase the CD sampling rate to enjoy a smoother sound, helping CD playback approach the quality of DVD Audio.

The unit's DVD playback features include slow motion, frame-by-frame playback, bookmarking (up to five discs), digital image zoom (1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2x, 3x, and 4x), and multi-angle playback (with compatible discs). And management of the video functions couldn't be easier thanks to the intuitive GUI menus on the TV or monitor screen. The menus make it possible to control various functions with the remote control without searching in vain for the right button combo.

Audio enhancements include built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders for enjoying true 5.1-channel surround sound through your home theater speakers, a virtual surround mode for two-channel sources, and MP3 multisession compatibility. The latter feature ensures full MP3 compatibility when playing an MP3 disc, including fast-forward, rewind, repeat, and shuffle functions. Listeners with families, meanwhile, will dig the night listening mode, which automatically adjusts the volume downward during loud scenes so as not to wake the family (or, in the case of certain movies, the neighborhood).

The connectors range from coaxial and optical digital audio outputs (one each); component, S-video, and composite video outputs (one each); and a pair of analog audio RCA outputs. Other features include your choice of 12 onscreen languages, a parental lock (DVD only) that prevents children from viewing off-color material, and a full-function remote control. All this in a thin silver chassis that takes up a minimum of vertical space.

Ever since I discovered this player in the summer of 2005, I have been highly impressed with how much it met both my normal and oddball demands. As a student of Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical vocal and choral literature, and Jazz and Classical piano, DVD-AUDIO capability is of great importance to me because there are a lot of titles especially in the Classical genre available in this format. One thing that sets this player apart from the other manufacturers' players is Yamaha's CD UpSampling feature. For those titles which are currently only available on CD and possibly will never be released on DVD-AUDIO and/or SACD, this option converts standard CDs to the quality of DVD-AUDIO. On the Musical Theatre, Opera, and choral side of things, this player is capable of playing both NTSC (North American) and PAL (European) DVDs on corresponding as well as opposite TVs. For certain titles in these genres, the North American editions are either four percent slower in tempo and picture...Read more
